Open Source & Co-ops

There is a clear synergy between co-operatives and open source, as they both share so many of the same principles and values. CanTrust Hosting Co-op is a technology co-op that provides fairly priced business tools and managed web hosting for value-aligned organizations.  By using open source software to consolidate all the tools together, we are able to provide a complete set of business tools for considerably cheaper than cloud vendors.  There are no per-user fees and no payments to multiple organizations.   As a Co-operative, we believe fair pricing should be based on actual resource usage, not by what generates the most profit.  We are 100% Canadian owned and operated, using only our own computers and Canadian networks.  Your data is protected by Canadian privacy laws, and is beyond the jurisdiction of any foreign legislation including the US Patriot or CLOUD acts.  We believe people must own and control their data.  We never sell, data mine, or otherwise use customer data.

Private Canadian Cloud

Our private cloud is designed to meet Canadian compliance needs. We own all the server hardware, we do not re-sell the public cloud.  Our servers are racked at professional co-location facilities (three in Greater Vancouver and one in Greater Toronto). These provide the best available physical security, redundant fail-safe power, and redundant high speed network connections to the Internet. With availability zones on west and east coast, we are able to provide geographic isolation for 100% Canadian backups and disaster recovery.  Because we use our own private hardware and manage everything in-house, there are no unexpected surprises or noisy neighbours to deal with. Sites start out stable and stay that way.

Our Canadian Business Platform: canWork

Daily Backups

Backups are hard!   At CanTrust, all customer data is automatically backed up daily at the filesystem level and kept for up to a year.   Then everything is backed up a second time with an independent backup job, to a secure offsite location with geographic separation – in case of a major disaster.    Backups are then tested by an automated random test process, and reports on that testing are read and acknowledged by humans.  The end result of this is a thorough double safety-net that stores old data back to 1 year old.

PIPA and PIPEDA

Federal law, the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), sets national standards for privacy practices in the private sector. Alberta and British Columbia have both passed similar laws, known in each province as the Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA). CanTrust Hosting Coop is fully compliant.

Canadian Controlled Data

There is a lot of data out there. Over 1 billion gigabytes (if you can measure it all). As the laws play catch-up with digital privacy and data security, storing outside of Canada will become more and more complicated.  Websites and databases are governed by the laws of where the server is located. For your data to be protected by Canadian Law, your website must be hosted in Canada.  We are a pre-vetted provider, with everything ready to go.
