CanTrust has joined the OpenMedia Protect Our Privacy Coalition.

This coalition is a group of like-minded Internet related businesses and service providers who stand against illegal mass surveillance by governments.

Why does this matter? From the description page:

Government dragnet collection of our sensitive private information is secretiveexpensive, and out of control

  • SECRETIVE: The sensitive private data of law-abiding Canadians could be caught up in unaccountable and highly secretive government spying.
  • EXPENSIVE: The government is about to spend $4-billion of our tax dollars to house new spying operations.
  • OUT OF CONTROL: In recent years there have been over 3,000 breaches of sensitive citizen data, affecting approximately 725,000 of us.

We are pleased to be part of this important effort and plan to publish some resources on our new website to help individuals and organizations protect their privacy from unconstitutional and illegal mass surveillance. We also will be offering some privacy-enhanced services for 2014 including encrypted filesystems for Virtual Private Servers).
